Sustainable investment manager Downing LLP plans to launch a series of new investment activities and funds, led by Paul Taylor. Paul is a former senior Fund Manager and Head of Restructuring at M&G and will manage capital on behalf of leading institutional investors.

Paul joined M&G from KPMG in 2005 and progressed to become the lead Fund Manager for the M&G Debt Opportunities Funds and the M&G Folios Funds. These institutionally backed funds were collectively valued at over €3bn and focused on a combination of debt and private equity strategies across a range of sectors, including real estate and healthcare.

Paul will now bring his experience and track record to Downing, where he will lead a new investment strategy built around his extensive global experience. This strategy will deploy capital from institutional investors into opportunities with high return potential in sectors such as healthcare services in the private equity space and European real estate, where the team has strong investor and investee networks.

Paul Taylor said: “I have been looking for the right home to build a business of significant scale building on our previous strong delivery for investors. Our simple aim will be to deliver outstanding risk-adjusted returns for our clients, through a combination of sourcing off-market opportunities and then executing with a first-class operating team. Downing is an entrepreneurial and fast-growing investment manager with a passion for sustainable investing, having recently been accredited as a B Corp. I look forward to growing a team and we expect to be able to announce new joiners soon.”

Kostas Manolis, Head of Private Market Investments, Downing LLP, said: “Paul has considerable experience in growing investment activities, from fundraising to building teams and investment pipeline, having been responsible for growing a book to over €3bn at M&G. We are delighted that he is joining Downing and see his appointment as the latest step forward in the continued expansion of Downing’s private markets activities. Paul shares our philosophy and approach when it comes to investment, so we believe that he is a perfect fit for our business.”

Torsten Mack, Investment Director at Downing, said:

"We are proud to support this exceptional management team, whose strong track record positions them well to build a new business in dementia care. This needs-based sector is underpinned by a lack of quality supply and we are investing in Fortava Healthcare to set and deliver high standards, and to help make a difference."

Johann van Zyl, CEO at Fortava, added:

"I’m thrilled to be working with Jamie, as we share the same values. We plan to grow Fortava into a leading provider of dementia care over the next five to seven years. But growth isn’t our primary focus—our goal is to deliver outstanding care and foster a joyful, supportive environment for both residents and staff. We’re delighted to be partnering with Downing who also share our values and we look forward to this journey with them."

Jamie Stuart, CFO at Fortava, commented:

“For me, it's about being more than just another care home provider. While dementia care in the UK is generally of a good standard, we want to set ourselves apart with a fresh approach. That’s why, after over 25 years in banking, I chose to partner with Johann and Downing on this venture.”
