Royal visit highlights landmark river restoration in northern Finland

On 27 August, King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden visited the Tengeliönjoki river in northern Finland to view the results of one of Europe's largest freshwater restoration projects, TRIWA LIFE. During the visit, the King officially opened the new fishway at Portimokoski alongside Finnish ministers and regional leaders, highlighting the importance of restoring river connectivity and supporting biodiversity across the Torne River watershed.
The Portimokoski fishway represents an important step in restoring fish migration within the Tengeliönjoki river system. Together with the Haapakoski fishway, it is expected to open approximately 970 kilometres of free-flowing river habitat to migratory fish, re-establishing natural migration routes that have been inaccessible for more than 100 years.
For Downing, the project demonstrates how renewable energy infrastructure and environmental restoration can work together to support a more sustainable future. Following our acquisition of Tornionlaakson Voima, which owns three hydropower plants within the Tengeliönjoki river basin, we have become a long-term stakeholder in a region where clean energy production and ecological restoration are being persued alongside one and other.
We recognise the importance of initiatives that strengthen the health and resilience of the ecosystems in which we operate. Within the Tengeliönjoki river system, restoration measures such as the new fishways are helping to reconnect aquatic ecosystems across the catchment.
As a long-term owner of renewable energy assets across the Nordic region, we believe responsible stewardship means looking beyond power generation alone. It means understanding the local environment, supporting sustainable outcomes and working alongside communities and stakeholders to ensure that renewable energy and healthy ecosystems can thrive together.
The King's visit was a reminder of the international significance of the work underway in the Torne River basin and the positive role that long-term investment can play in supporting the future of these remarkable landscapes.
